Sleepless night trying to wake up my pc

Yesterday night I was fighting with Wake On Lan (aka: WOL) feature that is supported by the BIOS of my home pc… I went to sleep at 5.00am, without any success. The day after is usually painful ;-)
I found a nice WOL mini howto, and also some easy source code made in C and C#.
I was thinking that, one time getting it working (broadcasting the magic packet) the pc is woked and the boot proceed normally as if I was just pressing the power-on button. Of course I was wrong: after the wake, my pc started booting Debian with Kernel 2.6.8 i386, but after some messages the kernel crashes dumping registries on display.
I searched around if someone else got same problem, but I didn’t find anything, but it seems that the kernel has some code inside to support the wake on LAN. Maybe some bug in this piece of code? I don’t understand what is the link between the Os kernel and a pure hardware functionality like the WOL… Someone had same experience, or has some advice?
